From the day we’re born, especially up until we’re about 22 years old, we spend most of our time looking down at the ground as we play, read, take tests and read some more. These early years are our bodies’ developmental years, the years our bodies grow and develop into young adults. Here’s a problem. When we are babies, we first sit, then crawl, walk and then run. The average time for a baby to start to walk is around 12 months but there are those parents that want their child to walk early so they stand them up, grab the baby’s hands and start to walk them. Not a good idea. Let them walk on their own. When the baby is ready to walk, he/she will walk. The time that they crawl is very important for spinal development. As they crawl, their lower back and bottom dips down and their neck and head looks upward. This helps to develop their proper spinal curvatures and when the baby walks too early, those good normal curvatures don’t develop. As that child ages and grows up, his/her spine is at risk for spinal problems. One of those problems is a lack of the normal neck curve (cervical lordosis). This put stress on the nervous system and it is the nervous system that controls every bodily function.
Remember your grandparents? Remember how they got around, slowly? They didn’t have good spinal hygiene when they were growing up and they didn’t know the importance to take care of their spine like we do now. Your spine acts as protection for your spinal cord and when it’s not aligned correctly, it can put pressure on the spinal cord which is part of the central nervous system. It’s your central nervous system that controls your entire bodily functions, including how your body reacts to outside interferences – your immune system.
Did you know that just the weight of a dime has the potential to limit nerve conduction by 40-60%? A series of studies conducted by Dr. Chung Ha Suh, Ph.D. and his team at the University of Colorado revealed that pressure equal to the weight of a dime could decrease the amount of energy flowing along the nerve by as much as 60%!!
Imagine a vital organ such as the heart (or any organ) getting only 40% of its normal energy!!
Chiropractic care works to improve overall function in the body by reducing this pressure, allowing the body to work as efficiently and effectively as possible.
